Margate, South Africa

Our first stop on our epic road trip of South Africa in our new vintage van called Stan, was to Margate in the South coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Margate is an absolutely stunning place with some amazing beaches on offer and some really awesome cafes to try.

Pulling off with Stan the Van was a very surreal experience! To finally see all our hard work pay off and to have something to show after the many nights of blood, sweat and tears. To be on the road felt absolutely amazing.

Having only two days experience pulling a caravan I must say the drive was also very nerve racking. It turns out there is lots to think about and be aware of when towing a caravan so when we finally arrived at Margate Caravan Park we were really relieved!

Margate Caravan Park couldn’t have been better in terms of the location. It is literally right in the middle of all the main attractions that are worth seeing in Margate. Here are some that we visited and enjoyed:

1) Ramsgate blue flag main beach - 6 minutes by car.

2) The Waffle House - 6 minutes by car.

3) Mac Banana - 18 minutes by car.

Shops near by:

4) Hibiscus Mall Centre - 3 minutes by car.

5) Doug’s Hardware - 4 minutes by car.

6) Gypsey World - 4 minutes by car.

The Margate Caravan Park rates are around R85 per person per night which as far as short term stays go is pretty cheap. Especially as they had almost everything that some of the more expensive parks are offering such as really clean ablution blocks, laundry rooms, electrical hook ups and well as a swimming pool, PutPut (crazy golf course), table tennis and pool tables. If you want to stay at the park for a month they will only charge you R1795 which you have to admit is brilliant.

As I’m sure many who are new to caravanning will know we definitely encountered our share of hiccups during our stay at the park. First, when we arrived we decide to un-hook and just push our van into place... however because of the really soft soil/sand our caravan wheels kept getting stuck. Luckily, we were rescued by some of our new neighbours who helped us push our van into place which we then had to re-position as our hookup extension lead was too short. What a start!

Then, on our third night we were hit by a big summer storm and yes... as you probably guessed Stan the Van decided to leak in the corner with all my clothes in the cupboard beneath it. Let’s just say my clothes were soaked and we feel asleep to the drip drip drip sound of the water filling up the bowl we placed to try prevent any further water damage.

Other than these minor incidents I would say it was smooth sailing. We had some load shedding (powercuts) but, our UPS worked perfectly. We had lights and WiFi all through every outage. I can say it's all worth it being able to work and adventure around one of the most beautiful parts of the country, South Africa.

Sharing experiences such as sunset walks, spotting a school of dolphins swim past us, sharing a yummy banana milkshake or being sun kissed while swimming in the warm Indian Ocean. If you are near the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Margate should definitely not be missed.

Much love - Josh Betts
